“Surviving Tarawa: Veteran Reflects On 80th Anniversary Of Operation Galvanic”

This article, published in the November 2023 issue of Leatherneck Magazine, shares the story of Lupe Gasca’s experiences in the Battle of Tarawa. Eighty years on, Lupe is one of just a few survivors of the assault on Tarawa. He was wounded on the third day of the battle, but recovered in time to rejoin the 2nd Marine Regiment on Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa. The interview I did with him was one of my most enjoyable - even at 101 years old, his mind is sharp and he’s full of good humor. I’m glad to call him a friend. It will soon be found on the Oral Histories page.
